Yesterday, I rented a car to run some errands. I finished really early and decided to take up a friend on her offer to visit her at her folks’ house in Central Washington. I knew I just needed to get out of town; what I didn’t expect was to find a slice of heaven on earth!
My friend’s folks live in a beautiful log home outside of town (friend says it’s a small city due to incorporation rules). They have a lovely yard and garden with lots of lavender and other flowers growing everywhere around the grass with lots of trees. My friend’s folks are super-nice; within minutes of me pulling up, I was offered a place to stay for the night.
And my friend’s folks have 2 dogs, Border Collies, who love to run and fetch and run and run and run! I love the dogs. If I ever moved to the country (doubtful, I’m such a city girl) I’d get a couple of Border Collies so I’d be forced to run them every day. The female dog kept trying to herd me, I think it was so cute because she knows what her job is and does it well.
My friend and I decided to get creative and make a pinata shaped like a snail (what else would it be?) for the BBQ tomorrow. We sat around and did nothing. We played with the dogs. We laughed. We danced around the house (okay, I didn’t but she did). We watched cartoons. I didn’t want to leave, and totally understand why she escapes to her parents’ house every chance she gets. We sat in the rental car while I smoked cigarettes and we both sipped beer (I only had one, early in in the afternoon). We giggled at how we felt like teenagers doing that, even though neither of us did that as teenagers!
I drove home around 10 pm, after spending a wonderful afternoon and evening just relaxing and enjoying the moment. It was bittersweet leaving as I would like to hole up at her folks’ house for a few days just to forget the move and my life in general. Maybe someday I can have a retreat like that, a place to escape for a few days. Now, I just need to keep focused on the move.
My going away BBQ is tomorrow – I’m super excited to get all my friends together one last time and have fun. There’s going to be lots of food, and the pinata filled with special surprises! I haven’t had a pinata at a party since I was a kid, and since it’s snail shaped, I’ll be sure to get lots of pictures!
And I finished Battlestar Galactica on Wednesday. Super exciting and such a cliffhanger! Ten more episodes will air in January 2009, I can hardly wait!
