LAD: Look, Ask, Dig

LAD is how I conduct research.  I came up with the concept, or parts of it anyway, from working at the reference desk.  I now use it in my market research position as well.
Look.
Look for the resource where you *think* it should be.  In a library, look in the catalog or check the shelf.  In [...]

Say it with a smile

One thing I’ve learned sitting at the reference desk is to make eye contact and smile.  Even when the library user isn’t making sense, even when the library user is *gasp* wrong, the user is more likely to respond positively when I say it with a smile.

Things will be busy around here tomorrow.  I’m doing a reverse mentoring program with SLA Pittsburgh and SLAPSG.  I will be presenting blogging and RSS.  As part of my presentation, I will be having the participants make a blog post here about anything they want.  Who knows what will be here?  Bios? Recipes?  Pictures?  It’s entirely up [...]

Most reference questions start like this.  And if I don’t know off the top of my head there are a few places I start looking.

The library literature – the map and source guides sitting right on my desk that I can hand to users.
The library catalog – if the user knows the title or author [...]

Yes, it’s true.  If only because I can waste hours playing the Wikipedia Game.
Of course there’s also this video, which explains my love of Wikipedia:

In library school, most of the professors are “Wikipedia deniers” – whether it’s from fear of the encroaching technology, or the lack of authority.  Now, before I [...]
